Enter your number, and in a few seconds you’ll receive a unique 6 digit number. If you select SMS Delivery, you’ll be asked to enter in your mobile phone number.If you haven’t, and prefer to receive codes via text message to your mobile device, choose that option. If you’ve installed 1Password or Google Authenticator, choose that option.
You can choose to receive codes either by SMS message or using the Authenticator app. You’ll be prompted to enter your password – enter it to continue. Scroll to the section for 2 step authentication. Once you’ve installed the Google Authenticator app or 1Password, login to your Shopify account, click on your name in the top right hand corner, and select Your Profile. You can find the Google Authenticator app in the Apple App Store or Google Play App Store. To setup 2 step authentication, you’ll either need 1Password, or the Google Authenticator app on your phone. 1Password supports 2 factor authentication without needing a mobile device, which makes it much more convenient. It works by generating a unique code on your mobile device, and requiring you to enter that code after you’ve entered your password. Two factor authentication (also known as two step authentication or 2FA) is an extra layer of security that is designed to ensure you are the only person who can access your account even if someone else has your password. Once you’ve created a unique password, you’ll want to enable two factor authentication on your Shopify account.
Using a secure, strong password that can’t be memorized, and therefore requires a password manager to remember, is a great defence against unwanted access to your account. If you’re not using a password manager like 1Password, then your Shopify account is likely the most vulnerable part of your online store.
